Frank “Ponch”
Duncan is know by many as a hard working family man. He
has supported his wife, their children, and himself for
many years. He loves nothing more than his family,
especially his 17 grandchildren. On January 3, 2015
Ponch had a heart attack. When being treated for this,
they found that he had Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, also
called HCM. It is a condition where the heart muscle
becomes extremely thick. Without treatment he would
die….
After researching they were able to find 1 of the
4 doctors in the USA that could do the surgery to help
the HCM not be so progressive. HCM left Ponch very weak,
unable to breathe, unable to play, or even walk with his
grandchildren; without getting winded. The surgery took
place in Ohio, in October 2015. He had to spend 10 days
in Ohio, for the surgery and recovery. After the surgery
there was a small set back, that sent him back to the
hospital. This was addressed, and he was sent home to
heal and recover with his family.
Ponch has been home for a couple of months now,
and has a few issues from the surgery. The issues are
being addressed as they come up. He is doing his best to
get back to “normal” life. He will be unable to return
to work for a while yet, which is the life he knows. He
worked all his life, going through this and unable to be
that man he once was, is unbearable.
He is continuing with his mediations, doctors
appointments, treatments, and recovery. This condition
is something he will have to have monitored for the rest
of his life. We are hoping the surgeries that he has
had, will be last that he will need to maintain his
health. Although this will be an ongoing battle for the
remainder of his life, we: his friends and family will
do all we can to help him. We will keep everyone updated
on his condition and progress throughout the year.
